Does tesla need oil change: An electric car

If you’re considering purchasing a Tesla or are already an owner, you probably have questions about upkeep. Do Teslas need oil? is one of the most frequently asked questions by the majority of our readers regarding Tesla maintenance.

In contrast to its gas-powered competitors, Tesla does not require oil, at least not in the conventional sense.

Having said that, maintaining a Tesla involves more than just not using oil. We’ll discuss why Tesla doesn’t require oil, which parts do in today’s post.

The manufacturer claims that Tesla vehicles don’t need routine oil changes. However, every Tesla vehicle’s drive unit contains lubricant oil, and the Tesla Service Center advises changing the oil every 100,000 miles for some Tesla models.

The reduction gearbox, which is connected to both the rear and front electric drive units, uses the oil inside a Tesla.

Lubricants are required for smooth operation. To further enhance these units’ performance and lifespan in more recent cars, Tesla added an oil filter.

According to earlier reports, metal particles that accumulated in some Tesla drive unit gearboxes led to malfunction.

On more recent iterations of the motor, an oil filter was mounted. Some claim that Teslas never require an oil change, but given that the oil has a filter and a filling hole, it’s best for us to be ready just in case.

You might not get an oil filter with your electric vehicle’s drive units if your Tesla Model S or Model X was made before 2021.

Therefore, for these vehicles, the oil inside the motor needs to be changed every 100,000 miles. That is the Tesla Service Center’s endorsed solution.

Because Tesla incorporates an oil filter into its newer drive units to keep lubricant quality for hundreds of thousands of miles, your electric motor’s lubricant will last longer than 100,000 miles if your car is a 2021 or newer Model S/X or Model 3/Y.

While changing the transmission oil will cost you about $150 to $200, replacing the filter will only cost you $25 to $40.
